Christ the King
Christ is the King of Kings. All authority is His. Nothing is outside of Christ's authority. Romans 13:1 tells us that “there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” This is very good news for the Christian, because we are of Christ, operating under His authority, which is the true authority and the source of all authority.
Christ has given us a commission in this life, a job to do. In Matthew 28:18-20, He says, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
We, the church, are God's kingdom and we are building that Kingdom. This is what we are going to be doing forever! And we glorify Him in the act of doing it. I rejoice in the many people God has brought together as a part of the Body of Christ with the common goal of building His kingdom.
Although we are very different from one another, we work together in this. The church body has a variety of needs and a variety of types to do the work, so Christ has a use for you in His kingdom no matter where you find yourself in life.
I have seen people on their deathbeds telling the Gospel to their nurses. I have heard the testimonies of children that have helped my faith. We all have so much to learn from one another and so much more to learn about Christ! The church is intended to be the place where we all grow together as we serve one another using the individual gifts that God has given us.
Those who have been given positions of authority in the church are called to set the example for all other service. In Matthew 20:25-28, Christ says, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
All the gifts and authority in the church come from Jesus Christ, and they all point back to him. So as we lead, and as we follow, we all serve, and we all glorify our Savior in what we do.
